Dan’s research interests are focussed on understanding the drivers of biodiversity patterns and approaches to monitoring change. His work has included surveys of biodiversity hotspots in the UK and Malaysia, focussing largely on invertebrates, but also supporting work looking at other taxa. His work has also focussed on understanding the impacts of habitat management on biodiversity and providing evidence to support more effective land management and restoration.

As a digital ecologist, Dan works to support ecology research and practice by creating and supporting digital tools for data collection, management and analysis. He has supported organisations to adopt digital technology to improve data quality and accuracy as well as creating software to carry out analysis and reporting. He is the author or co-author of several software libraries that support ecological data science.

Alongside his operational work, Dan coaches senior leaders, founders and technical experts whoa re navigating growth, complexity of transition. In particular he works with leaders of impact-led organisations, and those who are embedding biodiversity or natural capital strategies, or building digitally enabled environmental enterprises.
