NatureRes supports the creation, restoration and long-term management of species-rich grasslands, bringing together ecological research, practical experience and an understanding of local ecological context.
Our approach is grounded in decades of research and practical restoration experience, from the restoration of former quarries and other disturbed landscapes to long-term monitoring of how grassland communities establish, develop and respond to management.
We can work with partners from the earliest stages of a project to develop a restoration strategy or join an existing programme to provide specialist ecological advice, implementation support or long-term monitoring.
Developing realistic restoration objectives based on the ecology, history and potential of a site, and designing approaches that support the development of diverse, functioning grassland communities.
Advising on where and how to source appropriate native seed. This includes assessing donor sites, developing seed-sourcing strategies and using approaches such as brush harvesting and green hay, with ecological similarity and local context central to the decision-making process.
Working alongside land managers and restoration contractors to translate ecological objectives into practical restoration, including preparation, seed application, establishment and early management.
Helping develop management approaches that allow grasslands to mature and diversify over time, including cutting, grazing and adaptive management.
Designing monitoring programmes that assess not simply whether vegetation has established, but whether the developing grassland is moving towards the intended ecological outcome.
Using monitoring and experience to adjust management and restoration approaches as a site develops. Restoration is a process rather than a single intervention, and successful grasslands often require a willingness to learn and adapt over time.
